Green Tea: Boost your metabolism with more tea!

Green tea has been linked to many health benefits including weight loss by speeding up your metabolism. In short, it works by increasing oxidation of fat, burning it, or metabolizing it faster.   Green tea also works to increase protein absorption, which keeps you feeling full longer.  As an added bonus, tea is full of antioxidants, which fight cancer causing free radicals.

The winter season is generally a time when our metabolisms could use a boost.  You’re probably eating more and spending more time (sitting) indoors, to avoid the freezing cold.  Kick it up a notch, burn more fat, and get all the health benefits with these ideas on how to get your green tea fix stat.

  • Revamp your oatmeal.  When boiling the water just add a tea bag.  If you are making more than one serving keep the ratio to one tea bag per serving.  Add your favorite toppings and enjoy.

  • Add Matcha.  Powdered green tea concentrate can be added to just about anything.  It is available in Asian markets or online.  Add a dash to salad dressing, smoothies, dips, eggs, fish, chicken, grilled veggies, stir fry, or even sprinkle as a garnish.  The list goes on…
  • Make Ochazuke.  A Japanese dish consisting of white rice and green tea.  Traditionally this soup is served at the very end of an elaborate several course Japanese meal.  It also makes for a quick midnight snack, theoretical hangover cure, or just when you need something warm to take that winter edge off.  My personal favorite toppings are a drop of sesame oil, an egg, a dash of Nori Komi Furikake rice seasoning, saracha, and a garnish of sesame seeds.  Basically whatever you have in the fridge: leftover chicken, tofu, fish, sauces (oyster, fish, ponzu, hoisin, BBQ).  Japanese toppings include:  pickled plums (umeboshi), nori (seasoned seaweed, laver), grilled salmon, soy-simmered fish and seaweed, tempura, broiled eel, wasabi, salted salmon bits, mitsuba (a kind of herb), jako (a dried fish), and bonito flakes.
  • Bake with it.  Especially at this time of year there is a lot of baking going on.  What better way to get your daily metabolism boost than in the form of a delicious baked treat?  Share the cookies  and good health with your loved ones.
